AP piece 3 process

Image
Media: acrylic paint, painting board, maybe also oil pastels and color pencils Principles: light, symmetry, texture Process: for this piece, rather than focusing on the special perspective and structure, I choose to zoom in and to have a more precise view. In this painting, my character will be standing in front of her family picture. In the picture, some people will have normal faces while the others’ faces will be blurred, because in my culture, people believe that only the ones who are dead on earth can show their faces clearly in living people’s dreams. Through this painting, I want to explore how culture and beliefs can create the sense of horror in a special way and adding it directly into viewers’ mind instead of only delivering through the perspective and scene itself.

Piece 2

Warning: this is an unfinished piece :(  Process: First of all, I changed my outline from the original idea. Instead of the background of a regular kitchen, I decided to paint it all black and having a red table cloth falling down from the ceiling. On one hand, the table cloth falling down creates connection with my first piece where the light stream comes down. On the other hand, the irregularities can conduct to a stronger sense of unsettling. However, I started the painting with the table taking up majority of the space, but then I realized halfway that the perspective was off and I had to cover all my work to restart. After adjusting my composition and perspective, I decided to make all the chairs red, too. And my character sits on one end of the long table. Media: still acrylic, but comparing to the previous one, I made the acrylic paint thicker on this canvas so it can create a texture better.  Principle/element: I chose to paint the table cloth red so it may pop out fro...

Media: acrylic and painting board Principle & Elements: perspective, shape, pattern, color Process: brainstorming and thumbnail Idea: Kitchen is a very ordinary setting, a place where we will be at almost every day. Since there are no much difference between the kitchens in different houses, one abnormal sized/shaped object will be easily detected and shall make the viewer feel weird and uneasy. I choose to stretch the dining table out while all the other parts of the kitchen setting stay mundane and regular, and turn all the chairs backward against the table in order to create a feeling of strange and unknown, which unknown creates horror.

Piece 1

Sorry this is not done yet because I started over, I will continue to finish this over the weekend. Process: When I actually start to paint this piece, I realized that the original composition was not the best plan and does not deliver a sense of horror. So I decided to start it over by painting the canvas with black acrylic paint with some texture. I also redesigned the composition, making the bed extremely small instead of extremely big, because small beds tends to make us feel more uncomfortable. Media: the media I use has not changed, acrylic throughout. Element/principle: I added the element of shade to express the light in my painting.

Media: Acrylic painting Element/material: composition, color, texture, perspective Idea: Bedroom ought to be the place where one feels most comfortable and secured, but it is now distorted and creating a sense of discomfort. Also, everyone’s bed is basically all organized in a same/similar way, so an unusual way of setting up bed makes it easier to trigger the feeling of unease. Process: brainstorm and thumbnail
